You know something's amiss right at the start when a "girl" goes to the malt shop juke box and puts on a song with swelling strings. Who need Johnnie Ray when you have Mantovani?
She goes to a table where a couple is whining that her boy-friend is late. Did teenagers back then look old? They all seem to be in their early 30s.
Anyway, George has done what every teenager does--make a check list of what he wants in a job and gives his items numerical values. Happens all the time.
Because this is sponsored by the Ethyl Corporation, George has decided he wants to work at service station because he gets to be outside (I guess he likes snow) and meets people. It got him "a little bit excited!" Never mind that he has no auto mechanical training. Oh, and you've got to join clubs to network.
Well, sir, today, George would be sitting inside behind a counter selling third-rate rotisserie hot dogs because gas stations don't do repairs or even check your oil any more. They make money from food because the oil industry takes most of what little profit comes in from gas. That's your future, George. His girl-friend's proud. "And I haven't done anything." OK, she bought his lunch. Some day, she'll fetch his pipe and slippers as his buddy becomes part of the 1% as a corporate banker, foreclosing on money-losing gas stations.

Absolutely wonderful and insane (at least for me) film about how a kid took careful consideration about all his options.. finances, job secuirity, type of work, and surmises that the best job for him is working at a gas station.. excuse me.. a service station! Oh SURE, the reasons are all there for him I guess. It's just a wee bit concerning about how this kid looks to be smart, smart enough to work at a bank, but can't go to college for a career for something even better. I dunno, maybe small town mentalities I guess. But don't worry, he's got his gal there for him to help pay for him! Completely warped and delightful, and this is a MUST SEE on this site!

Subject: Kolchak The Night Stalker- The Early Years
Actor Darren McGavin appears in most of the last half of this visually attractive film about a young man who decides to work at a gas station. A scarier fate than anything Kolchak would encounter later.
4 stars because it all looks so dreamy and sweet.
